Arrive early and during your wait allow mild panic and paranoia to infiltrate the positive affirmations you’ve been repeating in your mind. Have some wine and play with the cutlery. Eventually he arrives and panic turns into a wild animal inside your throat and belly and breathing becomes difficult. Palms are sweaty and even if you wanted to throw your arms around him you can’t because you’re paralysed by fear, and even though this person is the absolute object of your affections who you think about night and day there is absolutely no way you can act normally. And a voice in your head is saying ‘why didn’t you wear a different dress??’ Then you try to make conversation and sound interesting but the heady mix of anxiety and wine has you saying random stuff like ‘I went to the Maldives and saw a shark’ and all the while your facial expression is akin to that of a person who’s just been hit by a car. And he knows…he can tell…he can smell your fear and he has no sympathy.
